Katy Maag, BSN, RN, CCRP, at Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center has been a passionate advocate of cardiac rehab for over 22 years.
“Someone in the United States dies every 36 seconds from heart disease. … I personally have been affected. I had a grandfather at the age of 52 who suffered a heart attack,” she shares. “I felt the need to be part of the solution.”
Katy educates patients on stress management to reduce risk of heart disease. She is a member of many organizations that focus on cardiac health and is always looking for ways to grow professionally to provide the best care.
“I personally take other classes and seek out information to provide the best for my patients. I join partnering organizations specific to heart health, such as the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, American College of Cardiology, Preventive Cardiology Nurses Association and American Heart Failure Nurse Association,” she shares.
Katy not only wants to provide the best care, but also give hope to her patients and their families.
“I give every one of my patients a coin of Saint John of God,” Katy reveals. “He is the patron saint of heart disease, and it has a nice prayer or saying on the back. I tell the patient it is something to remind them of how special they are and to take care of them as a precious gift.”
Katy helps her patients from the beginning of their health program to the end and all the challenges in between.
“I love my job. I enjoy helping people feel better and improve their heart health.”
