For nearly 110 years, our Youngstown market has compassionately provided expert care for members of the Mahoning Valley community and beyond. Part of the commitment includes an obligation to our mission to provide training opportunities for the next generation of specialized physicians.

It is with much excitement that we announce our local Youngstown ministry has received approval for a brand-new Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program. This is currently the first fellowship program that our medical education program has developed.

As you may know, both hospice and palliative medicine focuses on the physical, psychological and spiritual suffering that both patients and their families face with when confronted with serious illness or end of life. This 12-month program will use all three of Mercy Health Youngstown’s acute care facilities as well as the Hospice House in North Lima, OH.

“This is a true testament to our commitment to medical education and is the first step on a long road for further expansion,” shares Ronald Rhodes, MD, our chief academic officer in Youngstown (pictured above).

The new fellowship, which will begin with its first cohort later this year, will be led by William Eddy, DO, a longtime Mahoning Valley physician. The first class will accept two physicians who have completed their residency in primary care and the program will last 12 months.

“Being able to not only train physicians in sub-specialties such as hospice and palliative medicine locally but also being able to retain this talent here is truly our objective. It is one that will only further benefit the patients here in our community,” Dr. Rhodes adds.

Please join us in congratulating the graduate medical education team in our Youngstown market whose dedication and steadfast focus on training expert, specialized physicians will benefit those we serve for another 100 years.
