At Mercy Health – Springfield Regional Medical Center in our Springfield market, volunteers like Dan and Denise Fraley exemplify the spirit of service and compassion.

For the past two years, this dynamic duo has spent their retirement giving back to the community they love. Their shared commitment to service has not only strengthened their bond but also brought immeasurable benefits to the hospital’s patients and staff. Volunteering together allows them to support each other and create a positive impact, reflecting their belief in leaving every place better than they found it.

Dan’s passion for helping others shines through in his dedication to the volunteer program.

“I like helping folks, meeting good people and being there for patients during challenging times,” Dan shares. His personal experience as a patient fuels his commitment to giving back. “I’ve been on the other side and I know how important it is to have a friendly face and support during difficult times.”

Dan finds joy in the practical aspects of volunteering, especially assisting nurses by taking on tasks that allow them to stay with their patients.

“It feels good to be useful and help keep the nurses on the floor where they are needed most,” he says.

Denise Fraley brings her own unique strengths to the volunteer program. Despite not considering herself a “social person,” Denise thrives in her role.

“I like being out, talking to patients and feeling part of something bigger,” she explains.

For Denise, volunteering is not just about helping others but also about staying active and organized in retirement.

The Fraleys’ shared motto from their time at church camp — “Leave things a little better than you found them” — guides their volunteer work. They take pride in knowing they are contributing to a positive atmosphere and helping to improve the hospital experience for everyone they encounter.

Brad Soles, manager of volunteer services at Springfield Regional Medical Center, speaks highly of the Fraleys and their contributions.

“Our volunteers are an essential part of our hospital,” he emphasizes. “They provide added value by assisting with tasks that free up our nurses and ensure patients receive the care they need.”

Brad appreciates the Fraleys’ dedication and the sense of community they bring to the hospital.

“It’s inspiring to see retired individuals like Dan and Denise give back and make a difference every day,” he says. “Their work truly aligns with our Mission of serving the community and enhancing patient care.”
