Maxine Dillard is a UAW Ford retiree who loves to support her community. So, when Mercy Health and the steering committee on racial injustice and reform in Lima, OH partnered to host a COVID-19 vaccine clinic a few weeks ago, Maxine was there on the frontlines.
“I know African Americans are especially hesitant to get the COVID-19 vaccine,” Maxine shares. “But I believe it is important for as many people to get vaccinated as possible.”
A regular volunteer at the Heir Force Community School, Maxine takes pride in the work she does and is always happy to jump right in to help.
“I was so happy to be a part of this event… to get to talk to people and listen to their stories about what brought them there,” she says. “The nurses were so kind, and it was a very positive atmosphere. I heard from several people that they were so glad they came and got the vaccine.”
In fact, Maxine personally knew some of the individuals who came to the vaccine clinic to get their shots.
After that event and some additional conversations with leadership at Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center, Maxine accepted a short-term position to work as a vaccine navigator. Moving forward, she will be taking her amazing attitude and willingness to help others to a whole new level.
“People are always quick to follow the rumors about the vaccine. I want to provide them with the facts.”
Today is World Health Day, and this year’s theme is “building a fairer, healthier world.” This means focusing on equal access when it comes to health care needs.
Maxine is the walking embodiment of these efforts. In her new position, she will be reaching out to churches, homeless shelters, and those living in poor and underserved communities to educate them about the importance of receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. She will also be connecting them to the resources they need in order to get vaccinated.
“God is in charge and we just need to do our best to be his servants and use the talents he gave us,” Maxine wisely states.
We are so excited to welcome Maxine to the Mercy Health team and know she will be living out our mission on a daily basis in the Lima, OH community.
