Anderson Hospital Nurses Step Up to Help Fight COVID-19

Many of our Mercy Health nurses are currently going above and beyond their normal job descriptions. They are learning new skill sets outside of their regular roles. By doing this, they are able to help with COVID-19 and other intensive care unit (ICU) patients if needed.

Take the C4 Progressive Care team at Mercy Health – Anderson Hospital in Cincinnati, OH for example. In a matter of weeks, each RN completed ventilator training and basic critical care skills training. From there, they shadowed other members of the care team. These extra efforts have now created a large core group of nurses who are available to assist whenever the ICU needs extra help.

“My staff immediately took on new skills and responsibilities without hesitation, understanding that this is what is best for our patients,” says Says Sarah Varney, MSN, RN, PCCN, Nurse Manager C4 Progressive Care and Anderson Inpatient Dialysis. “I am so impressed with their positive attitude and support. Teamwork and living out our mission in action for sure! A true demonstration of going above and beyond.”

One nurse in particular, Heather Jodrey, recently floated to ICU when it experienced a surge. She took this challenge head on by managing a critical care assignment and titrating critical care drips. She put all the new skills she had learned into action right away.

“She collaborated with the ICU RNs and managed the care for her patients successfully,” Sarah adds. “To say I am proud of this team, is an understatement!”
