This month, the students at Springfield High School are stepping up in a big way to show their support for individuals affected by the chronic condition of diabetes!
Members of this high school’s National Honor Society (NHS) have put their artistic talents to use and created handmade cards with uplifting messages to encourage patients in our Diabetes Education Program at Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center.
With diabetes impacting 38.4 million people or 11.6 percent of the U.S. population, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), many National Honor Society students have family members or friends who live with the day-to-day challenges of managing diabetes. Their cards aim to provide a touch of cheer for those working hard to control their blood sugar and maintain their health.
“Every month, we look for ways to give back to the community,” Lydia Bal, a senior student, explains. “My mom, who’s a nurse, mentioned wanting to bring encouragement to those living with diabetes, especially during November. I asked the National Honor Society group if they would be interested and everyone was excited to help. We organized a session that week to design and write the cards.”
Another National Honor Society student, Isabelle Lambert, shares, “It felt good knowing something as simple as a card could brighten someone’s day and remind them they’re supported.”
The cards were warmly received by our patients in the Diabetes Education Program. Rita Sowinski, RN, CDCES, a nurse educator with the program, shares, “We usually give patients educational materials, so the cards were a fun addition. It was nice to see the patients’ reactions when they received a handmade card from the students. The surprise brightened their day.”
The American Diabetes Association reminds us that November is National Diabetes Month and a time to “rally against the diabetes epidemic” and “uplift your loved ones living with diabetes and help all those in need across America.” Our Diabetes Education Program, an ADA-recognized program, provides essential support for patients managing diabetes in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Through their thoughtful gesture, Springfield High School students are making a meaningful difference in the lives of those touched by diabetes.
