Youngstown offers many outdoor summertime activities — learn some of the best ones here

Youngstown, Ohio, is located in the heart of Mahoning County. John Young founded this small Midwestern city in 1797. In its early days Youngstown flourished as an industrial center. You can still see glimpses of that history today. The city is also nestled within a beautiful natural area. It boasts several notable parks and plenty to do, see and experience. Are you looking to get outdoors in Youngstown? Consider one of these area gems.

Mill Creek MetroParks

This huge park is one of the largest metropolitan parks in the country, stretching for 2,600 acres. It’s also Ohio’s first park district. When it comes to outdoor activities in Youngstown, this is the place to go. One of the highlights is the Ford Nature Center. This wonderful facility offers educational programs and several display areas. It also has a bird observation area, walking trails and gardens.

Lanterman’s Mill is one of the area’s historic landmarks. It still operates as a mill. You can watch as the mill grinds wheat, corn and buckwheat. You can also browse the gift store to find unique gifts made by local craftsmen.

Mill Creek offers many chances to explore the great outdoors. It has lakes and ponds, beautiful gardens and a performing arts pavilion. It even has its own golf course. Mill Creek Golf Course provides visitors two championship courses. Each 18-hole course has plenty of challenges and beautiful surroundings.

Biking in Youngstown

Among the outdoor activities in Youngstown, bicycling is a favorite for both locals and visitors. You can choose from several bike paths in Mill Creek Metroparks. The city is also within a half hour’s drive from half a dozen “rail-to-trail” bike paths. Examples include:

  • Garret Wonders Bike Trail: This three-mile trail will eventually link to other trails. It takes you through neighborhoods and industrial areas in nearby Warren.
  • Niles Greenway: This 4.5-mile trail connects to the Mill Creek Metroparks. It takes you through scenic areas. Expect to pedal through woodlands, industrial neighborhoods and suburban backyards.
  • Little Beaver Creek Greenway Trail: This 12-mile rail trail has an asphalt surface for a smooth ride. It takes you through some industrial areas, wetlands and through a covered bridge as you bike from Lisbon to Washingtonville.

Kayaking Down the Mahoning River

The Mahoning River Water Trail is a 23-mile stretch that’s perfect for paddling and taking in the scenery. Kayakers enjoy wildlife viewing and natural beauty. Four nearby parks offer access to the Mahoning River Water Trail. Examples within a half-hour’s drive from Youngstown include:

  • Canoe City MetroPark
  • Burbank Park in Warren
  • Foster MetroPark in Newton Falls
  • Braceville Nature Preserve in Braceville Township

Noah’s Lost Ark Animal Sanctuary

Kids and adults love visiting this sanctuary located in nearby Berlin Center. This no-kill facility gives a safe home to exotic animals that have been abused or given away. Some of the animals you can expect to see at Noah’s Lost Ark include lions, ligers, tigers, leopards, bears and tortoises. It offers tours and educational programs that make every visit a learning experience.
