With a common mission of delivering compassionate health care and creating healthier communities, we are very pleased to announce plans for Mercy Health and Bon Secours Health System to join forces! Together, we will deliver top quality care across seven states at our 43 hospitals and more than 1,000 points of care.  More importantly, we will provide almost $2 million per day ($640 million dollars annually) in charity care and community benefit programs directly into the communities we serve!

Once complete, this merger between Mercy Health and Bon Secours will mark the creation of one of the largest health systems in the country. Together, we will collaborate in delivering the highest quality health care throughout seven states to the residents that we care for each and every day.

“Our decision to join forces with Bon Secours is rooted in our shared and very deep commitment to delivering compassionate, low-cost, high-quality health care to our communities”, says John M. Starcher Jr., President and CEO of Mercy Health. “Working together, our strong faith-based heritage fuels our mutual focus to provide efficient and effective health care for each patient who comes through our doors.”

Families can depend on us. People in our communities know us for improving the health of the communities we serve and delivering the value they expect from health care systems as large as ours.  We are so pleased that Bon Secours shares our vision for healthier, thriving communities and has chosen to join forces with Mercy Health to make quality, accountable health care a reality in the eastern half of the United States.”

Richard J. Statuto, President and CEO of Bon Secours Health System echoes John Starcher’s sentiments, “the mission, vision, values and geographic service areas of Bon Secours and Mercy Health are remarkably well-aligned and highly complementary. This merger strengthens our shared commitment to improving population health, eliminating health disparities, building strength to address social determinants of health, and investing heavily in innovating our approaches to healthcare.”

Together, we rank in the top performing quartile of Catholic health systems for low cost, high quality patient care, promoting healthier lives and creating more affordable health care for residents across an expanded footprint.

Bon Secours and Mercy Health: What will our impact be on our communities?

  • Almost $2 million per day in community benefit, serving the most vulnerable in our service areas.
  • One of the top 20 health systems in the nation and the fifth largest Catholic health system with $8 billion in Net Operating Revenue and $293 million in operating income. This strong operating margin allows us to advance our shared ministry and reinvest in community benefit.
  • 57,000 associates and more than 2,100 employed physicians and advanced practice clinicians.
  • Over 10 million patient encounters across seven states, with 43 hospitals and more than 1,000 points of care.

Guided by our shared faith and commitment to partner with communities, there are many reasons why it makes sense for us to come together, but the most important reason is that we now have a stronger, more scalable, dynamic team of providers and staff ready to deliver quality care — not just health care, but care for the whole person and the whole family — across our country. We are proud to put the people we mutually serve first, as we always have and always will.

In the coming months, we will work together with Bon Secours to finalize our plans to merge by the end of the calendar year. We will keep you posted as our plans to come together as one of the leading and largest health systems in the country unfolds!
