We want to welcome Johnathan Spitnale, DO, to Mercy Health – Defiance Family Medicine!

Dr. Spitnale was exposed to chronic disease at an early age when both his father and sister were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

“I always wanted to learn how the body functioned and the cause of these types of chronic diseases,” he shares.

After graduating from medical school, Dr. Spitnale completed his family medicine residency at Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center.

“I enjoy the variety that family medicine has to offer,” Dr. Spitnale explains. “I also have always enjoyed seeing patients of all ages, including pediatric patients.”

As a doctor of osteopathic medicine, Dr. Spitnale is trained in osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), which is a hands-on approach to treat disease and help the body function better.

“I enjoy preventative medicine,” Dr. Spitnale says. “Specifically, managing chronic diseases, such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus.”

Inspired by his sister, who has been a family practice nurse practitioner in Defiance for several years, Dr. Spitnale chose to join our ministry of care.

“I am excited for the connections that I can make with patients and their families as well as getting involved with the Defiance community,” he shares.

When it comes to family practice, Dr. Spitnale focuses on the practical approach with an emphasis on preventing chronic disease.

“The provider-patient partnership is everything,” he explains. “My job as a physician is to work with you to help solve problems and prevent bad outcomes.”

Dr. Spitnale recalls an impactful moment when a patient was struggling to manage their diabetes but eventually were able to lower their hemoglobin A1c numbers.

“I remember how much better the patient felt and how thankful they were once their diabetes was under control.”

When he is not practicing medicine, Dr. Spitnale enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons. As a family, they enjoy hiking, weekends at the lake and rooting for The Ohio State University.
