For the team members across our ministry high-quality care isn’t an expectation, it’s a commitment.

This commitment to excellence was recently confirmed for seven of our Ohio-based hospitals by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) 2021 Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings. Hospitals in Lorain, Lima, Toledo, Tiffin, Willard, Urbana and Defiance each earned a 5-star rating, the highest score possible from the federal agency.

“I am so proud of the Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center team for once again ranking among the very best in the country in providing safe and high-quality care,” says Ronda Lehman, president, Mercy Health – Lima. “For more than a century, St. Rita’s has cared for the region in a comprehensive and compassionate way and our teams continue to show their dedication to our mission and our community.”

In some markets, this signifies improvements from the last year’s ratings and reaffirms to both patients as well as our team members that our ministry is committed to providing the highest-quality, most compassionate care available.

“Of all the challenges we faced last year, I couldn’t be prouder of our team who not only helped us achieve this accolade. It is one that I personally dedicate to each of our associates,” says Jamie Houseman, president, Mercy Health – Urbana Hospital. “Every member of our team from physicians, to nurses, to respiratory therapists, to our dietary and environmental associates are responsible for the care we provide. This one is for them!”

The Overall Hospital Quality Star ratings published by CMS are designed to help compare hospitals by evaluating safety, quality and patient experiences. CMS assigns ratings of one to five stars to more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide based on their performance across five areas of quality. They then publicly report these ratings on the Medicare.gov website.

“This recognition is truly an honor and a testament to the unwavering commitment our staff has to patient care, safety and desired outcomes,” says Edwin Oley, president, Mercy Health – Lorain. “Despite the unprecedented challenges we’ve faced over the past year, they continue to work tirelessly to ensure that our community can rely on us for exceptional care.”

The ratings are an extension of recent advancements and achievements throughout our ministry that are focused on the care delivered each day.

“Congratulations to our Mercy Health teams at St. Anne, Tiffin, Defiance, and Willard, who deserve this recognition for the outstanding work that they do every day,” shares Bob Baxter, president, Mercy Health – Toledo. “Five stars puts these hospitals among the nation’s very best and is further proof of Mercy Health’s commitment to delivering the absolute highest quality of care to our community.”
