As each day passes, more and more Americans are receiving their COVID-19 vaccines. These vaccines are an important tool in helping us fight this pandemic and return to a more normal way of life.

Marci and Joe Williams were thrilled they were able to receive their shots in February. Hear Marci’s firsthand thoughts on their experience.

“We decided to get our COVID-19 vaccines because Joe was recently diagnosed with advanced, non-curable prostate cancer. He is 69 years old and also suffers from COPD, emphysema and sleep apnea.

Joe’s radiation oncology doctor, Dr. Suketu Patel at the Mercy Health – Perrysburg Cancer Center, wanted him to get the vaccine as soon as possible. I needed the vaccine as well as I have coronary artery disease and am 68 years old.

When I found Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center had vaccine appointment openings, I booked them right away. The process was very simple. Also, fun fact, I worked at St. Vincent Medical Center as the director of occupational and employee health. I still “bleed blue” as they say.

The directions to the vaccine site were excellent. Security was there to direct us and helped both provide and unload wheelchairs and walkers for patients as needed. Start to finish, the process took maybe 50 minutes, and most of that time was spent in the observation waiting area after our shots to make sure we didn’t have any initial reactions. Overall, I don’t think St. Vincent Medical Center could have done a better job with this project.

Joe and I both had two dose vaccines and did not have a reaction to any of our shots. Not even a stiff arm. The COVID-19 vaccines are safe, effective and, to my knowledge, have few reactions. Everyone who can get it, please do. We need herd immunity.

Finally, I just wanted to say thank you to Mercy Health for the wonderful, well-organized and efficient process of getting vaccinated for COVID-19. Everyone was in a good mood and the staff was beyond helpful. A special shout out to Mr. Steve who was nice enough to push my husband through the process in a wheelchair, as I could never have done it myself. Also, a wonderful young gentleman who was an outpatient pharmacist gave us both our injections and did such a great job.”
