Use these tips to stay safe and healthy this spring break

As spring break approaches, preparing your family to stay healthy is as important as ever.  Maintaining wellness can ensure that you enjoy your vacation, without putting your friends or loved ones at risk for illness. The following are tips to help you enjoy spring break, without taking a break from your health.

Bring a first aid kit or supplies

Though we never expect injuries to occur on vacation, they often do. When this happens, it can be difficult to locate the necessary supplies to heal and treat wounds.  Packing items such as clippers, tweezers, alcohol wipes, Neosporin, hydrocortisone, and Benadryl can help keep small accidents from turning into serious problems.

Refill your prescriptions

It is often challenging to find a pharmacy or a prescribing physician if your medication runs out while you’re away from home. Refilling prescriptions before you leave for vacation can help prevent complications. Be sure to pack any medications you may need, even if you don’t take them on a daily basis.

Create an emergency plan

Creating a list of emergency contacts and medications can be a big help if you ever face a critical situation. Keep a list of your medical needs in your purse or wallet, in case an emergency keeps you from communicating this information on your own.  If traveling without your children, ensure you provide the guardian with a written release for emergency medical attention, as well as descriptive instructions for any medications they require.

Learn about the destination

When visiting a new location, especially internationally, it is important to familiarize yourself with any diseases local to the area.  If you’re headed abroad, there may be certain vaccinations or other precautions recommended to prevent illness.  Be sure to research the location and learn what illnesses you may be at risk for.

By taking these simple precautions, you can help keep your family healthy throughout spring break. For those traveling, we wish you a happy and healthy time away, and that you return home relaxed and rested.
