Meet Alex Moseley, MD, one of the highly-skilled physicians on our cardiovascular team in our Cincinnati market!
Dr. Moseley is one of the few advanced imaging specialists in the area and while he is based at Mercy Health – Fairfield Hospital, he serves patients throughout our entire ministry. In this Q&A, we dive into his background, expertise and passion for improving heart health.
Q: Can you share a bit about your background and what led you to specialize in cardiovascular medicine?
Dr. Moseley: I started in pharmacy school, but while rounding in hospitals, I realized I wanted more patient interaction. That led me to medical school at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, where I discovered my love for internal medicine.
During my residency, I learned to care for a wide range of patients, from the very healthy to the critically ill. Cardiology stood out because of its breadth—it combines complex problem-solving with meaningful impact on patients’ lives.
I was particularly drawn to the imaging side of cardiology because it allows us to ask “why” when something is wrong. Once we figure out the “why,” we can work on a solution, whether through medication, lifestyle changes or advanced procedures.
Q: What are your key specialties within cardiovascular care?
Dr. Moseley: My focus is on advanced imaging, which plays a crucial role in diagnosing and managing conditions, like valvular heart disease and heart failure. Valvular heart disease occurs when the heart’s valves don’t open or close properly or when the blood doesn’t flow in the proper direction. Imaging tests, like specialized ultrasounds, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scans, help us see the full picture of a patient’s heart, guiding us in creating a personalized treatment plan.
Q: How would you describe the procedures or treatments you provide to patients in simple terms?
Dr. Moseley: Compared to a general cardiologist, I use specialized imaging techniques to get detailed insights into the heart’s structure and function. I interpret my own MRIs and CT scans, which gives me a comprehensive view of the patient’s condition. From there, I focus on optimizing medical therapy, coordinating additional tests if needed, and referring patients for procedures when necessary.
My goal is to ensure every patient receives the right care at the right time.
Q: What does a typical day look like for you as a cardiovascular specialist?
Dr. Moseley: No two days are the same, and that’s what I love about my work. I usually spend part of my day seeing patients in the clinic and the other part reading imaging studies like echocardiograms, CTs and MRIs. The variety keeps me engaged and allows me to make a real difference for my patients.
Q: What do you find most rewarding about working with patients who have heart-related conditions?
Dr. Moseley: Helping people feel better is incredibly rewarding. Even when I have to deliver difficult news, giving patients a clear understanding of their condition and what to expect helps them feel more in control.
Q: How does our ministry’s approach to cardiovascular care make a difference in the Cincinnati community?
Dr. Moseley: Cardiovascular care is truly a team effort. At Mercy Health, we work closely across specialties to create thorough, step-by-step treatment plans. This approach ensures that every patient receives thoughtful, coordinated care.
In addition, Mercy Health offers an exceptional range of services close to home. For example, we have cardiac CT capabilities at all sites and echocardiograms at many outreach locations. This means we can perform most of the basic and even some advanced workups without patients needing to travel far.
Q: Are there any innovative technologies or techniques in cardiovascular care that you’re particularly excited about?
Dr. Moseley: I’m excited about expanding our advanced imaging capabilities to allow us to diagnose a wider range of conditions and provide more tailored treatments for our patients.
Q: What advice do you have for people looking to maintain a healthy heart?
Dr. Moseley: The best advice is often the simplest—stay active and focus on putting healthy foods into your body.
Q: Outside of work, what are some ways you like to relax or stay active?
Dr. Moseley: My wife, son and I, along with our two dogs, love spending time outdoors. I’m an avid runner and hiker, and I’m a huge fan of The Ohio State University sports. I also love trying new foods.
