Every mother and baby deserves the best possible start in life, regardless of the challenges they may face. That is why, in our Toledo market, our ministry is proud to offer the Franklin Avenue New Beginnings program.

This pioneering initiative is designed to provide comprehensive care for high-risk OB patients who are also navigating the complexities of substance use disorder. It represents a significant step forward in our commitment to supporting the health and well-being of our community.

A collaborative effort for optimal outcomes

Our New Beginnings program is spearheaded by a team of health care professionals dedicated to ensuring the best outcomes for both mothers and their babies.

“This program addresses a critical gap in care for pregnant women with substance use disorders,” Alicia Huckaby, DO, a physician collaborator, shares. “By providing comprehensive, integrated support, we can significantly improve the health outcomes for these mothers and their babies.”

The program’s multidisciplinary approach is designed to address the unique needs of high-risk OB patients who may be struggling with substance use disorder. Through weekly group prenatal sessions, participants receive holistic care that includes not only their prenatal medical needs but also group counseling, social work support, psychiatric care and psychotherapy.

Overall, this model offers a well-rounded support system that addresses both the physical and mental health needs of patients.

Why new beginnings matter

The challenges faced by pregnant women with substance use disorder are significant, but they are not insurmountable. The New Beginnings program was created to provide these women with the resources, support and care they need to overcome their challenges and deliver healthy babies. By offering a structured, supportive environment, we aim to optimize clinical outcomes not only for the mothers but also for their newborns.

“Our goal is to provide a safe, judgment-free space where women can receive the care they need,” Dr. Huckaby explains. “We understand the stigma that can be associated with substance use during pregnancy and we are here to support our patients without judgment. Our focus is on helping them and their babies thrive.”

Ongoing support through every stage

The New Beginnings program is not just about prenatal care – it is also about providing continuous support throughout a mother’s entire pregnancy journey and beyond. Our program includes weekly group sessions that continue for up to six weeks postpartum. These sessions focus not only on prenatal care but also on postpartum care, breastfeeding support and relapse prevention.

“We’re committed to being there for our patients through every step of their journey,” Dr. Huckaby says. “Our team is available to help with a variety of issues, from prenatal care and delivery to postpartum support and addiction services. We want our patients to know that they are not alone and that we are here to help them succeed.”

A community of care

At its core, the New Beginnings program is about community. We understand that the journey through pregnancy and recovery can be overwhelming, which is why our group sessions are designed to foster a sense of belonging and mutual support.

“The community aspect of our program is crucial,” Dr. Huckaby adds. “We want our participants to know they are part of a community that cares. We are here to provide the support they need, without judgment, to help them and their families have a healthy start.”

The launch of the New Beginnings program at Mercy Health – Franklin Avenue Obstetrics and Gynecology is exciting for our ministry as well as the Toledo community. As we continue to grow and expand this program, the goal remains clear: to provide high-risk OB patients with the support, care and resources they need to achieve the best possible outcomes for themselves and their babies.
