For those considering weight loss surgery, the road to a healthier lifestyle is complex and involves many steps, one of which is a psychological evaluation. This evaluation, required by most insurance companies, helps ensure that patients are mentally prepared for the challenges that arise throughout the bariatric surgery process.
At Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center, Samantha Cain, PhD, (pictured above, right) is integrated within our weight management program. She offers high-quality, accessible pre-surgical psychological evaluations. These evaluations help identify any potential psychological barriers that may impact a patient’s success before, during, or after surgery.
What happens during a pre-surgical psychological evaluation?
Dr. Cain explains the pre-surgical evaluation is not designed to pass or fail a patient, but to assess any psychological or emotional concerns that may impact the surgery’s success.
Here’s what the evaluation typically includes:
- Clinical Interview: The patient meets with the psychologist for an in-depth discussion of their eating habits, emotional health and any mood-related concerns. This portion typically lasts 60-90 minutes.
- Screening Measures: Patients are asked to complete psychological screening measures, which can take up to two hours during an in-person visit. If a patient lives far from the clinic, Dr. Cain may adjust the process to accommodate the patient’s location.
- Psychoeducation: A significant portion of the intake is spent educating the patient about the bariatric surgery process, as well as the potential effects of surgery on their emotional well-being, relationships and daily life.
- Follow-up Appointments: About a month after the initial evaluation, patients will meet again for a follow-up session to review the screening results and discuss any additional steps or recommendations.
Dr. Cain emphasizes that this evaluation is not just about the surgery—it’s about preparing the patient for long-term success! Mental health stability plays a crucial role in maintaining weight loss.
