Our ministry is happy to welcome Navin Thakur, MD, a cardiothoracic surgeon, to Mercy Health – Springfield Regional Medical Center!

Dr. Thakur was first inspired to go into medicine after experiencing a family member falling seriously ill.

“My nephew was suddenly very sick as a baby, and I felt helpless watching as he struggled,” he shares.

So, driven by this desire to help others in similar situations, Dr. Thakur began his journey to practicing medicine.

His pursuit to study medicine took him across the world and through three countries – the United States, United Kingdom and India. Later on, he chose to specialize in cardiovascular surgery.

“I found it fascinating during my surgical rotation as a medical student,” Dr. Thakur shares. “The faculty also encouraged me a lot.”

Patients are most often sent to see Dr. Thakur when they have experienced some form of cardiac distress. Dr. Thakur specializes in a range of cardiac, vascular and thoracic surgery procedures, drawing upon his varied training experience and his mentors’ guidance over the years.

“I am continually trying to stay up to date with my training and my skills,” he explains. “I want my patients to know that I am offering all of my knowledge and dedication to their safety and recovery.”

Dr. Thakur was particularly impacted by one patient in severe post-operative shock who he took charge over after just coming back from a vacation.

“All her caregivers had lost hope. However, with the highest care available, she survived. It was an eye-opener to never give up.”

Dr. Thakur continues to seek opportunities to offer his talents and enrich his experience, especially as the model of how medical care is delivered continues to evolve. He adds that he was initially drawn to our ministry because of the opportunity to work with other talented, amicable cardiologists and an enthusiastic administration.

Despite the challenges of an ever-changing health care system, Dr. Thakur continues to put the patient first, striving for a physician-patient relationship that is based on being candid.

“The most rewarding aspect of what I do is the gratitude of the patients and their relatives,” he shares.

When he is not practicing medicine, Dr. Thakur enjoys traveling and spiritual reflections.
