91-year-old Harold Weaver ended up at Mercy Health - St. Rita's Medical Center after falling at home. It happened to be the same day as his wife's 91st birthday celebration and their 72nd wedding anniversary. Harold was determined to make this day special for his wife even though they had to spend it in the hospital. He teamed up with the nurses at St. Rita's and organized a surprise steak lunch with chocolate cake for dessert. During this celebration, they talked about their wedding, honeymoon and other nostalgic life events. We feel blessed to have been a part of this romantic surprise for Harold and his sweetheart while he was in our care. Read their full story on our blog in the link in our bio.

Joe Feds was a senior in high school when he noticed something strange with his vision. Whenever he looked to the left, he would see double. After visiting an ophthalmologist thinking there was a problem with his eyes, Joe found out the issue was actually with the nerves that move the eyes. This led him to a neurologist at Mercy Health and what they discovered was much more than an eye problem. .
After the neurologist scheduled an MRI, the test revealed a walnut-sized brain tumor sitting deep behind Joe’s left eye. Joe’s care team diagnosed the tumor as a #meningioma, a type that forms on the membranes that protect the brain’s surface. Given his symptoms, Joe’s tumor had to be removed. Vincent DiNapoli, neurosurgeon with Mayfield Brain & Spine and Director of the Brain Tumor Center at The Jewish Hospital – Mercy Health, performed Joe’s surgery. .
After finishing the procedure, Dr. DiNapoli confirmed the tumor was indeed benign. He was even able to make his incisions within Joe’s hairline leaving no visible scars.“I don’t think I could have had any better of a team just to take me through it all,” says Joe. he looks forward to his business studies at the University of Cincinnati. He notes, “I am blessed to be here.”

✋ Most kids won’t use the word “bullying” when describing their experience. Listen for phrases like “drama at school” or that someone is “messing with them.”
✋ Pay attention to your child’s friends and take notice if they stop calling or extending social invitations.
✋ Keep watch for falling grades, loss of personal property, or common complaints of headaches, stomachaches, cuts or bruises.
✋ If your child tells you about being bullied, listen calmly and offer support. Never become angry or upset.
✋ Praise your child for being honest about bullying and tell a school administrator about the situation.

Ernie's heart wasn’t working properly but open heart surgery was not an option because of age and previous procedures. Because of his great need for a different treatment plan, Ernie became the first patient in the Lima, OH region to undergo a minimally invasive transcatheter mitral valve repair through the use of MitraClip. MitraClip is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat mitral regurgitation. This heart condition occurs when blood leaks backward through the mitral valve as the left ventricle contracts. When this happens, blood can flow both in and out of the ventricle and atrium during a contraction. At 75 years old, Ernie told Dr. Patel at Mercy Health - St. Rita’s Medical Center this was by far the best he has felt after a surgery. Knowing from experience what is involved in open heart surgery, Ernie says he was happy to head home just one day after his procedure.
